What is Natural Movement Fitness?
Good question, and one that is easy to answer!
Have you ever been on a hike or a walk in a natural setting? To navigate the terrain, you need practical human movement skills such as balancing, climbing, jumping, throwing, catching, running, crawling, and more... Now these skills seem like they should come easy to all of us, but when was the last time you crawled? On all fours, knees about an inch off the ground, in a proper contra lateral pattern? One part of the movement assessment I would take you through is this crawl, and the gold standard is 2 minutes of crawling... yep, 2 minutes. Get up and try it now. Here is a tutorial for you to look at first.
Not that easy... but it is a great movement snack if you have a spare 2 minutes to move around.
Same thing goes for jumping, climbing, etc... We need to practice these skills to keep them. And they are practical! Sadly our lives have become so structured and easy, that we don't often reach our arm up over our head, carry anything heavy for longer distances... or jump over anything.
So, how can you learn to practice these skills? In the warmer months I teach MovNat outdoors, in the colder months I teach it online. As well, I incorporate natural movement skills into all sessions.
How can you start learning today? I have three great resources for you to check out.
